Allergist: 'dust mites or mould'. Does the AC help with one and hurt with the other?

Berceni, Brâncoveanu boulevard, 1978 block, 11-year-old boy with allergic rhinitis. The allergist said it could be dust mites or mould, tests in 3 weeks. I read that AC lowers humidity (good for mites) but makes mould (bad). So do I switch the 5-year-old 12,000 Gree in his room on or off?
What is really happening
Allergy symptoms cannot identify the source on their own. Dust, outdoor pollen, damp surfaces and other indoor exposures may contribute. An air conditioner can cool and remove moisture, but does not diagnose an allergy or guarantee a target humidity. Inspect filters and drainage and follow the clinician’s advice for the person concerned.
- Particles of different sizes move through the air.
- The filter retains some particles, depending on its type.
- A standard filter is not equivalent to HEPA filtration or gas removal.
Particles are symbolic and not to scale.
- Allergy practice guidelines recommend keeping humidity below 50% as a mite-control measure, alongside allergen-proof covers and washing bedding above 55 °C. [Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology /, 2013]
- Relative humidity above about 50% increases house dust mite levels; a clean air conditioner helps keep humidity below this threshold. [WHO / NCBI Bookshelf, 2009]
- On filters of residential split units, Cladosporium (~32%), Aspergillus (~9%), Acremonium and Alternaria dominate – genera known as allergens. [Building and Environment, 2025]
- EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 30 and 50%, to prevent mould. [US EPA, 2024]
What we do on site
- Collection cover; cleaning solution on evaporator, roller, pan; pressure wash in place.
- Sanitising solution, rinse, drying on 'Fan'.
- Outdoor unit, washed in place.
- We measure the room humidity before and after 30 minutes of running – you see on the spot how much it pulls.
- See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- Allergen-proof covers on mattress, duvet, pillow; bedding at 60 °C weekly.
- Hygrometer; Dry in the evening down to 45–50%, then Cool at 25–26 °C, then Fan 20 minutes.
- No carpet, no plush toys on the bed, HEPA vacuum.
- Filters every two weeks.
What NOT to do
- Follow medical advice for symptoms. If the unit is suspected of mould contamination, stop using it and arrange an assessment before restarting.
- Do not put a humidifier in his room.
- Do not use 'anti-mite' spray on the mattress in the evening – it irritates the rhinitis.
Prevention
Plan maintenance according to the appliance manual and what is found during inspection. Keep any medical follow-up separate; cleaning does not guarantee that symptoms will resolve.
