Teenager with exercise-induced asthma, bedroom with AC – what settings and what maintenance?

Voluntari, house, my 16-year-old son plays competitive football and has exercise-induced asthma with an inhaler. His bedroom has a 4-year-old 12,000 BTU Daikin. The coach said to 'be careful with air conditioning'. Is it the cold or the dirt? Sanitise it or remove it?
What is really happening
Allergy symptoms cannot identify the source on their own. Dust, outdoor pollen, damp surfaces and other indoor exposures may contribute. An air conditioner can cool and remove moisture, but does not diagnose an allergy or guarantee a target humidity. Inspect filters and drainage and follow the clinician’s advice for the person concerned.
- Particles of different sizes move through the air.
- The filter retains some particles, depending on its type.
- A standard filter is not equivalent to HEPA filtration or gas removal.
Particles are symbolic and not to scale.
- The fungal genera dominant in split units – Cladosporium, Alternaria, Aspergillus – are recognised triggers of allergic asthma. [Building and Environment, 2025]
- Home dampness raises the risk of developing asthma by about 33% and visible mould by about 29% (meta-analysis of 16 studies). [PLOS ONE, 2012]
- Daikin Romania and INSP recommend setting the unit at 25–27 °C and a maximum 6–10 °C difference from outdoors, for comfort, health and lower consumption. [Daikin România, 2024]
- On filters of residential split units, Cladosporium (~32%), Aspergillus (~9%), Acremonium and Alternaria dominate – genera known as allergens. [Building and Environment, 2025]
What we do on site
- Collection cover, cleaning solution, pressure wash in place of evaporator, roller, pan.
- Sanitising solution, extra rinse, full drying.
- We check the Daikin fine filters and their replacement cycle.
- Outdoor unit in the garden, washed in place.
- We set a 'night profile' on the remote together. See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- 25–26 °C, low speed, louvre up, bed out of the jet.
- After training, do not step sweaty straight under the jet – 10 minutes for a shower and dry clothes first.
- Hygrometer, 40–55%.
- Filters every two weeks, 'Fan' 20 minutes before shut-off.
What NOT to do
- Do not remove the unit – sleeping at 30 °C after training is worse for recovery.
- Do not use 'Turbo'/'Powerful' at night.
- Do not put air fresheners or 'breathing' oils in the room.
Prevention
Plan maintenance according to the appliance manual and what is found during inspection. Keep any medical follow-up separate; cleaning does not guarantee that symptoms will resolve.
