Baby with atopic dermatitis – does the air conditioner help or make it worse?

Pipera, new flat, 9-month-old baby with atopic dermatitis. In summer he sweats and gets worse, but the dermatologist said 'beware of dry air'. We have a 2-year-old 9,000 BTU Daikin in the bedroom. Do we use it or not? And if so, does it matter how clean it is?
What is really happening
Allergy symptoms cannot identify the source on their own. Dust, outdoor pollen, damp surfaces and other indoor exposures may contribute. An air conditioner can cool and remove moisture, but does not diagnose an allergy or guarantee a target humidity. Inspect filters and drainage and follow the clinician’s advice for the person concerned.
- Particles of different sizes move through the air.
- The filter retains some particles, depending on its type.
- A standard filter is not equivalent to HEPA filtration or gas removal.
Particles are symbolic and not to scale.
- The relative humidity range with the fewest adverse health effects is roughly 40–60%. [Environmental Health Perspectives / PubM, 1986]
- When a contaminated air conditioner starts, airborne fungal concentration in the room can jump from 40–920 to 5,500–100,000 CFU/m³. [Indoor Air, 2023]
- CDC: mould exposure can cause nasal stuffiness, wheeze, eye and skin irritation, and more severe reactions in asthmatics and allergic people. [CDC, 2024]
- Fine filters (deodorising, purifying) are cleaned about every 6 months and replaced every 6 months to 3 years, per the Daikin manual. [Daikin, 2023]
What we do on site
- We schedule while the baby is out for a walk or in another room with an adult.
- Collection cover, film over the cot and all textiles.
- Cleaning solution on evaporator, roller, pan; pressure wash in place.
- Sanitising solution, dosed; double rinse and full drying – in an atopic baby's room, zero residue is the rule.
- We check the Daikin fine filter and tell you whether it needs replacing.
- Outdoor unit, washed in place. See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- Set 25–26 °C, low speed, louvre up, never a jet at the cot.
- Hygrometer on the nightstand; if it drops below 40%, a bowl of water in the room or a clean humidifier (washed daily).
- Cotton bedding, washed at 60 °C.
- 'Fan' 20 minutes before shut-off; filters washed every two weeks.
What NOT to do
- Do not use an unwashed humidifier – it becomes the mould source itself.
- Do not spray anything into the unit, not even 'natural'.
- Do not chill the room below 24 °C 'so he does not sweat' – over-cold, dry air cracks the skin.
Prevention
Plan maintenance according to the appliance manual and what is found during inspection. Keep any medical follow-up separate; cleaning does not guarantee that symptoms will resolve.
