Are 'HEPA/anti-allergy filters' for a split worth it for an allergic child?

Editorial guide · Updated 18 September 2026

In short: Allergy symptoms cannot identify the source on their own. Dust, outdoor pollen, damp surfaces and other indoor exposures may contribute. An air conditioner can cool and remove moisture, but does not diagnose an allergy or guarantee a target humidity. Inspect filters and drainage and follow the clinician’s advice for the person concerned.

Situation discussed

Drumul Taberei, Valea Argeșului street, 9,000 BTU LG, 3 years old, room of my 6-year-old daughter with mild allergic asthma. I bought a set and placed them over the original filters. Do they help? The unit seems to blow weaker. See current rates on the Prices page.

What is really happening

Allergy symptoms cannot identify the source on their own. Dust, outdoor pollen, damp surfaces and other indoor exposures may contribute. An air conditioner can cool and remove moisture, but does not diagnose an allergy or guarantee a target humidity. Inspect filters and drainage and follow the clinician’s advice for the person concerned.

Explanatory diagramA standard filter has limits
A standard filter has limits
  1. Particles of different sizes move through the air.
  2. The filter retains some particles, depending on its type.
  3. A standard filter is not equivalent to HEPA filtration or gas removal.

Particles are symbolic and not to scale.

What the studies say
  • Fine filters (deodorising, purifying) are cleaned about every 6 months and replaced every 6 months to 3 years, per the Daikin manual. [Daikin, 2023]
  • Filter efficiency and indoor particle concentration are the most important factors determining how fast the evaporator fouls. [Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory / , 2002]
  • The blower (cross-flow fan) is the most fungus-contaminated component of a split unit, more than the filter or the front of the evaporator. [Indoor Air, 2023]
  • Manufacturers warn that a clogged filter reduces cooling and causes odour; LG recommends cleaning every 2 weeks for efficiency. [LG Electronics, 2020]

What we do on site

  1. We remove the extra filters and check whether the evaporator iced up / produced excess condensate.
  2. Collection cover, cleaning solution, pressure wash in place of evaporator, roller, pan.
  3. Sanitising solution, rinse, drying.
  4. Outdoor unit, washed in place.
  5. We show you which original filters the LG has and how to clean/replace them. See current rates on the Prices page.

What you can do yourself

  • Original filters washed weekly in her room.
  • A room HEPA purifier (a real, certified one) by the bed at night.
  • Allergen-proof covers, humidity under 50%, louvre up.
  • 'Fan' 20 minutes before shut-off.

What NOT to do

  • Do not put anything over the split's original filters – no sponge, no cloth, no 'HEPA'.
  • Do not buy 'silver-ion/nano' for the unit.
  • Do not rely on the split as a purifier – it is a cooler, not a filter.

Prevention

Plan maintenance according to the appliance manual and what is found during inspection. Keep any medical follow-up separate; cleaning does not guarantee that symptoms will resolve.
