Ex-smoker with chronic bronchitis – I cough harder in the room with the AC
This page explains a situation in an editorial format. It is not an open discussion board or a verified customer review. Contact us on WhatsApp about your own appliance.
Berceni, Luică street, 1977 block. I am 58, quit smoking 3 years ago, have chronic bronchitis. In summer, in the living room with the 18,000 BTU Gree (7 years old, washed once), after an hour I start coughing with phlegm. In the bedroom, no unit, less. I need cool air, but not like this. What can be done?
What is really happening
For a person with asthma or another respiratory condition, comfort settings and exposure concerns should be discussed with their clinician. A change in symptoms does not establish that the appliance is the cause. Visible dampness, mould, an unusual smell or blocked filters justify a technical inspection, separately from medical care.
- The unit and indoor environment: technical inspection, moisture, deposits and maintenance.
- Symptoms and diagnosis: assessment by a medical professional.
A unit problem does not establish the cause of an illness. Maintenance does not replace medical care.
- CDC: mould exposure can cause nasal stuffiness, wheeze, eye and skin irritation, and more severe reactions in asthmatics and allergic people. [CDC, 2024]
- The 'dirty sock' or musty smell from an air conditioner comes from volatile organic compounds produced by microbial biofilm on the evaporator and blower. [Current Microbiology, 2000]
- On filters of residential split units, Cladosporium (~32%), Aspergillus (~9%), Acremonium and Alternaria dominate – genera known as allergens. [Building and Environment, 2025]
- The relative humidity range with the fewest adverse health effects is roughly 40–60%. [Environmental Health Perspectives / PubM, 1986]
What we do on site
- Collection cover; cleaning solution with longer contact time – at 7 years with one wash, the layer is thick.
- Pressure wash in place: evaporator, roller, pan, hose; repeated until the water runs clear.
- Sanitising solution, extra rinse, drying on 'Fan'.
- Outdoor unit, washed in place.
- See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- Sit out of the direct jet; 25–26 °C, low speed.
- Hygrometer: 40–55%; good hydration thins the mucus.
- Airing 10 minutes 2–3 times a day.
- Filters every two weeks, 'Fan' 20 minutes before shut-off.
What NOT to do
- Do not stay in the room during sanitising – take a 2-hour walk.
- Do not use sprays, air fresheners, ozone – all worsen bronchitis.
- Do not give up cool air – humid heat is worse for you than a clean unit.
Prevention
Plan maintenance according to the appliance manual and what is found during inspection. Keep any medical follow-up separate; cleaning does not guarantee that symptoms will resolve.
