With asthma, does the cold from the unit matter more, or the mould in it?
This page explains a situation in an editorial format. It is not an open discussion board or a verified customer review. Contact us on WhatsApp about your own appliance.
Militari, Dezrobirii street, 1986 block. My husband has allergic asthma (mites, mould), I do not. We argue over the remote: he wants 22 °C 'or he cannot breathe', I say the cold makes him cough. The unit is a 5-year-old 12,000 BTU Midea, never sanitised. What is the actual problem – the temperature or the unit?
What is really happening
For a person with asthma or another respiratory condition, comfort settings and exposure concerns should be discussed with their clinician. A change in symptoms does not establish that the appliance is the cause. Visible dampness, mould, an unusual smell or blocked filters justify a technical inspection, separately from medical care.
- The unit and indoor environment: technical inspection, moisture, deposits and maintenance.
- Symptoms and diagnosis: assessment by a medical professional.
A unit problem does not establish the cause of an illness. Maintenance does not replace medical care.
- The fungal genera dominant in split units – Cladosporium, Alternaria, Aspergillus – are recognised triggers of allergic asthma. [Building and Environment, 2025]
- Mould odour in the home is associated with about 73% higher risk of developing asthma (OR 1.73), more than visible mould (OR 1.29). [PLOS ONE, 2012]
- Relative humidity above about 50% increases house dust mite levels; a clean air conditioner helps keep humidity below this threshold. [WHO / NCBI Bookshelf, 2009]
- Daikin Romania and INSP recommend setting the unit at 25–27 °C and a maximum 6–10 °C difference from outdoors, for comfort, health and lower consumption. [Daikin România, 2024]
What we do on site
- Collection cover; cleaning solution; pressure wash in place of evaporator, roller, pan.
- Sanitising solution, extra rinse, drying on 'Fan'.
- Outdoor unit, washed in place.
- We measure bedroom humidity before/after and run a test: 25 °C, 30 minutes, with your husband in the room. See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- The remote compromise: Dry 30 minutes in the evening, then Cool 25 °C, low speed, louvre up, Fan 20 minutes at the end.
- Hygrometer on the nightstand – target 45%.
- Allergen-proof covers, bedding at 60 °C.
- Filters every two weeks.
What NOT to do
- Not 22 °C with a jet at the bed – a guaranteed physical trigger.
- No sprays, air fresheners, 'ion purifiers' in the bedroom.
- Do not postpone sanitising because 'he says it is fine like this'.
Prevention
Plan maintenance according to the appliance manual and what is found during inspection. Keep any medical follow-up separate; cleaning does not guarantee that symptoms will resolve.
