Pregnant, third trimester, mild asthma, I sleep with the unit on – is that ok?
This page explains a situation in an editorial format. It is not an open discussion board or a verified customer review. Contact us on WhatsApp about your own appliance.
Voluntari, new block, 8 months pregnant, mild asthma. I cannot stand the heat, I sleep with the 9,000 BTU Gree (2 years old) on all night. My husband says it is not good 'for the baby'. I say not sleeping is worse. The unit has never been sanitised. Who is right and what should we do?
What is really happening
For a person with asthma or another respiratory condition, comfort settings and exposure concerns should be discussed with their clinician. A change in symptoms does not establish that the appliance is the cause. Visible dampness, mould, an unusual smell or blocked filters justify a technical inspection, separately from medical care.
- The unit and indoor environment: technical inspection, moisture, deposits and maintenance.
- Symptoms and diagnosis: assessment by a medical professional.
A unit problem does not establish the cause of an illness. Maintenance does not replace medical care.
- The fungal genera dominant in split units – Cladosporium, Alternaria, Aspergillus – are recognised triggers of allergic asthma. [Building and Environment, 2025]
- WHO concludes that indoor dampness and mould significantly increase the risk of respiratory symptoms, allergies and asthma. [WHO, 2009]
- The relative humidity range with the fewest adverse health effects is roughly 40–60%. [Environmental Health Perspectives / PubM, 1986]
- Daikin Romania and INSP recommend setting the unit at 25–27 °C and a maximum 6–10 °C difference from outdoors, for comfort, health and lower consumption. [Daikin România, 2024]
What we do on site
- We schedule within 1–2 days; you stay in another room or take a walk while we work.
- Collection cover, film over the bed.
- Cleaning solution, pressure wash in place: evaporator, roller, pan.
- Sanitising solution, double rinse, full drying on 'Fan' – zero residue.
- Outdoor unit, washed in place.
- See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- 25–26 °C, low speed, louvre up, bed out of the jet.
- Hygrometer, 40–55%; hydration.
- Inhaler at hand, per your doctor's plan.
- Husband: filters every two weeks and 'Fan' before shut-off – that is his contribution.
What NOT to do
- Do not sleep at 22 °C 'to compensate' – the cold jet is an asthma trigger.
- Do not use sprays or air fresheners in the bedroom.
- Do not stay indoors during sanitising.
Prevention
Plan maintenance according to the appliance manual and what is found during inspection. Keep any medical follow-up separate; cleaning does not guarantee that symptoms will resolve.
