UV-C lamp fitted inside the split 'against mould' – worth it for an asthmatic?
This page explains a situation in an editorial format. It is not an open discussion board or a verified customer review. Contact us on WhatsApp about your own appliance.
Drumul Taberei, Râul Doamnei street, 12,000 BTU LG, 4 years old, my bedroom (allergic asthma). Sounds too good. What does the data say? See current rates on the Prices page.
What is really happening
For a person with asthma or another respiratory condition, comfort settings and exposure concerns should be discussed with their clinician. A change in symptoms does not establish that the appliance is the cause. Visible dampness, mould, an unusual smell or blocked filters justify a technical inspection, separately from medical care.
- The unit and indoor environment: technical inspection, moisture, deposits and maintenance.
- Symptoms and diagnosis: assessment by a medical professional.
A unit problem does not establish the cause of an illness. Maintenance does not replace medical care.
- UV-C mounted on the coil cuts microbes on irradiated surfaces by up to 99%, but health-benefit evidence is inconsistent and it does not replace cleaning. [LBNL Indoor Air Quality Scientific Findi, 2023]
- UV disinfection of cooling coils and drain pans in offices cut surface microbes by about 99% and workers' symptoms by about 20–40%. [The Lancet, 2003]
- Methylobacterium, the dominant bacterium in evaporator biofilm, is a strong biofilm former resistant to UV, desiccation and heat/cold shock. [mSphere (ASM) / PubMed Central, 2020]
- Mould remains allergenic even when dead, so merely 'killing' it with a spray does not solve the problem – it must be physically removed. [US EPA, 2024]
What we do on site
- Full sanitising first: collection cover, cleaning solution, pressure wash in place of evaporator, roller, pan, sanitising solution.
- Outdoor unit, washed in place.
- We show you the roller – the place the lamp would never reach anyway.
- See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- See current rates on the Prices page.
- 25–26 °C, louvre up, filters every two weeks, 'Fan' before shut-off.
What NOT to do
- Do not accept 'no more sanitising needed' from anyone, for any gadget.
- Do not look directly at a UV-C lamp if you already have one – corneal burns.
- Do not let a company drill the housing for cables – you ruin the pan seal.
Prevention
Plan maintenance according to the appliance manual and what is found during inspection. Keep any medical follow-up separate; cleaning does not guarantee that symptoms will resolve.
