Two cats and a dog – the unit is full of hair, is there a bacteria risk too?
This page explains a situation in an editorial format. It is not an open discussion board or a verified customer review. Contact us on WhatsApp about your own appliance.
Popești-Leordeni, house with garden, 12,000 BTU Samsung in the living room, 3 years old. Two long-haired cats and a golden retriever. The filters fill with hair in 3 days, and when I removed them I saw hair on the fins too. It smells slightly of 'wet animal'. Is it just hair or a hygiene issue too?
What is really happening
Finding microorganisms in a study of air conditioners does not show that this particular unit caused an infection or symptoms. The condition of the unit, moisture, ventilation and other indoor sources need to be assessed separately. Cleaning is maintenance, not a medical treatment or a guarantee of sterile air.
- A typical split recirculates room air.
- Ventilation introduces outdoor air through a suitable solution.
- US DOE: filters should be cleaned or replaced every month or two during the cooling season, more often with constant use, dust or pets. [US Department of Energy – Energy Saver, 2024]
- Filter efficiency and indoor particle concentration are the most important factors determining how fast the evaporator fouls. [Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory / , 2002]
- The filter of a daily-used air conditioner accumulates about 5 times more fungi than the carpet in the same room. [Atmospheric Environment, 2002]
- Replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower an air conditioner's energy consumption by 5–15% (US DOE). [US Department of Energy – Energy Saver, 2024]
What we do on site
- Collection cover; we remove hair from the fins by hand before washing so it does not clog the pan.
- Cleaning solution on evaporator, roller, pan; pressure wash in place – the hair-and-dander felt comes out in chunks.
- Drain hose flushed until clear – in pet homes it clogs with hair.
- Sanitising solution.
- Outdoor unit in the garden, washed in place – golden retriever hair gets there too.
- See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- Filters: vacuumed every 2–3 days, washed weekly.
- Brush the animals outside, not in the living room.
- Litter box as far from the unit as possible; HEPA vacuum twice a week.
- 'Fan' 30 minutes before shut-off.
What NOT to do
- Do not put mosquito mesh or a stocking over the intake grille 'to stop hair' – it blocks airflow and ices the evaporator.
- Do not remove hair from the fins with a comb or vacuum – you bend them.
- Do not use 'pet odour' sprays in the unit.
Prevention
Plan maintenance according to the appliance manual and what is found during inspection. Keep any medical follow-up separate; cleaning does not guarantee that symptoms will resolve.
