Vinegar, baking soda, tea tree oil in the unit – do 'natural' remedies work?

Drumul Taberei, Tudor Vladimirescu street, 9,000 BTU Samsung, 4 years old. I do not want chemicals at home (small child). I read in a group that white vinegar sprayed on the evaporator kills mould, or baking soda, or a few drops of tea tree oil in the pan. What works and what does not?
What is really happening
We understand the concern for the child – which is exactly why the EPA principle matters: mould is physically removed, not 'killed' in place, because dead spores and fragments remain allergenic and resuspend when the fan starts. Vinegar is acetic acid: on the evaporator's aluminium and the copper pipes it causes corrosion, and acid fumes in a child's bedroom are not 'natural' in any useful sense; manufacturers explicitly allow only water and neutral detergent. Baking soda cannot reach the roller and remains as a white deposit that holds moisture. Essential oils are volatile organic compounds with irritant potential for small airways, and in the pan they become a carbon source for bacteria. Laboratory tests on antifungal agents show variable efficacy and, above all, that they do not remove already-deposited spores. Pressurised water is, literally, the cleanest method.
- Switch off and follow the safety instructions in the manual.
- Wash only filters identified as washable by the manufacturer.
- Let them dry as instructed before refitting.
- EPA principle: mould must be physically removed, not merely 'killed'; biocides are not recommended as routine practice. [US EPA, 2024]
- Mould remains allergenic even when dead, so merely 'killing' it with a spray does not solve the problem – it must be physically removed. [US EPA, 2024]
- Manufacturers prohibit benzine, thinner, scouring powder or insecticide on the indoor unit; only water and neutral detergent are allowed. [Mitsubishi Electric, 2020]
- Antifungal agents tested in the laboratory show variable efficacy against indoor air fungi, and many do not remove already-deposited spores. [International Journal of Environmental R, 2015]
What we do on site
- Collection cover; cleaning solution (alkaline, biodegradable, no chlorine, no fragrance) on evaporator, roller, pan.
- Pressure wash in place with plenty of water – this is where most of the result comes from.
- Sanitising solution at the minimum effective dose, then an extra rinse – in a home with a small child, zero residue.
- Full drying on 'Fan' before we leave.
- Outdoor unit, washed in place.
- See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- The most 'natural' measures with real effect: 'Fan' 20–30 minutes before shut-off, filters washed in warm water and a little dish soap every 2 weeks, humidity 40–55%, daily airing.
- Louvres and housing – cloth with soapy water.
- Torch on the roller once a season.
What NOT to do
- Do not spray vinegar, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or oils on the evaporator.
- Do not put baking soda, salt or 'tablets' in the pan.
- Do not confuse 'natural' with 'safe for aluminium and lungs'.
Prevention
Water, drying, clean filters, one wash a year – that is the truly 'chemical-free' routine.
