Allergic child, unit in his bedroom – does it really need twice a year?

My son (7) has confirmed allergic rhinitis to dust mites and mould. The unit in his room (9,000 BTU Gree, 3 years old, Colentina) runs all night in July–August. The doctor said 'clean the unit often' but did not say how often. Isn't once a year, in spring, enough?
What is really happening
The mould genera dominant in split units – Cladosporium, Alternaria, Aspergillus – are exactly those in allergy tests, and at start-up a contaminated unit can raise room spores from under a thousand to tens of thousands per cubic metre. In children, home dampness and mould are associated with more respiratory infections and symptoms. A unit cleaned in May is clean in June; in August, after 60 nights of condensation, it no longer is – hence the second visit. The second thing a clean unit does for a mite-allergic child: it dehumidifies better, and mites decline below 50% humidity.
- Start with the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Consider operating hours, environment and observations.
- Plan checks and record completed work.
One fixed interval does not suit every unit and home.
- The fungal genera dominant in split units – Cladosporium, Alternaria, Aspergillus – are recognised triggers of allergic asthma. [Building and Environment, 2025]
- When a contaminated air conditioner starts, airborne fungal concentration in the room can jump from 40–920 to 5,500–100,000 CFU/m³. [Indoor Air, 2023]
- In children, home dampness and mould are associated with more respiratory infections and symptoms, according to recent meta-analyses. [Paediatric Respiratory Reviews, 2023]
- Relative humidity above about 50% increases house dust mite levels; a clean air conditioner helps keep humidity below this threshold. [WHO / NCBI Bookshelf, 2009]
What we do on site
- Visit 1 (May): sealed double cover, foil on bed and toys, alkaline detergent, adjustable pressure wash of evaporator, roller, pan and hose; chlorine-free, fragrance-free sanitising; filters; outdoor unit in place; drying on 'Fan' with the window open.
- Visit 2 (late July): same protocol – faster, the unit is less dirty; we usually combine it with another unit in the house so you do not need two bookings.
- At both: before/after photos on WhatsApp, so you see how much rebuilt between visits and we adjust the rhythm next year.
- See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- Filters weekly in July–August (2 minutes).
- 'Fan' for 30 minutes in the morning, window open, before switching off.
- Set 24–25 °C, not 20 – less condensation, less biofilm.
- Hygrometer in the room: under 50% for mites.
What NOT to do
- Do not spray 'anti-allergen' into the grille – the EPA has no evidence for biocides in air systems and the child inhales them.
- Do not put a purifier under the unit as a substitute – it filters the room, not the unit.
Prevention
Allergic child + unit at night: May + late July, every year; if symptoms clearly drop, discuss with the doctor whether to keep this rhythm or increase it.
When to call us
0764 012 943, WhatsApp, Monday–Saturday 08:00–20:00; Colentina is 20 minutes away; we book both visits at once.
