After another company's 'sanitising', the unit has smelled of chemicals for a week

Voluntari, house, 12,000 BTU Samsung in the children's bedroom. Since then, a week now, the unit smells of sweet chemicals and my youngest coughs at night. What did they do? Is it dangerous? Can that smell be removed? See current rates on the Prices page.
What is really happening
A 'sanitising' spray applied to a dirty evaporator only acts on the surface of the dirt layer; the biofilm underneath stays alive and, worse, dead mould remains as allergenic as live mould. What your children are breathing now is the product's vapour (usually quaternary ammonium plus fragrance), sticky residues that catch dust, plus the spores and biofilm fragments from before. The principle in environmental guidance is simple: mould is physically removed, not 'killed' in place – and agencies warn that the effectiveness of biocides sprayed into air systems is unproven and their health effects uncertain.
- Deposits or moisture inside the unit.
- The condensate drainage route.
- Sources within the room, assessed separately.
- EPA warns that the effectiveness of biocides sprayed into air systems has not been demonstrated and their health effects are uncertain. [US EPA, 2024]
- Mould remains allergenic even when dead, so merely 'killing' it with a spray does not solve the problem – it must be physically removed. [US EPA, 2024]
- EPA principle: mould must be physically removed, not merely 'killed'; biocides are not recommended as routine practice. [US EPA, 2024]
- Antifungal agents tested in the laboratory show variable efficacy against indoor air fungi, and many do not remove already-deposited spores. [International Journal of Environmental R, 2015]
What we do on site
- We come as soon as possible; meanwhile keep the unit off and the room aired.
- We open and photograph – as a rule the evaporator is as dirty as before, it just shines from the product.
- Sealed collection bag; film over the cots and toys.
- Alkaline cleaning solution, then pressure wash in place until the water runs clear – that removes both the chemical residue and the biofilm.
- Extra rinse with clean water, precisely because a foreign product was put into the unit.
- Sanitising solution, at the correct dose, on clean surfaces, then full drying on 'Fan'.
- Outdoor unit in the garden, washed in place. See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- Until we arrive: unit off, window opened twice a day, children sleep with the door open.
- Wash the filters with plenty of warm water – they carry product too.
- Wipe the housing and louvres with soapy water.
What NOT to do
- Do not run the unit 'to air the product out' – that is exactly what sends it into the children's lungs.
- Never again accept a 'sanitising' without water washing and without a cover/collection bag; if no dirty water comes out, nothing was cleaned.
- Do not try to 'wash' it yourself with the bathroom hose – without a cover, water gets into the circuit board.
Prevention
A properly cleaned unit smells neither of mould nor of chemicals – it smells of nothing. Annual sanitising, with the children's room as priority.
