15-year-old unit full of mould – worth sanitising or replace it?
This page explains a situation in an editorial format. It is not an open discussion board or a verified customer review. Contact us on WhatsApp about your own appliance.
Militari, Iuliu Maniu boulevard, 1979 block, a 9,000 BTU LG installed around 2010. It still cools, but inside, when I removed the filters, I saw the roller is completely black. It smells terrible. I am a pensioner and do not want to waste money. See current rates on the Prices page.
What is really happening
A completely black roller means a thick layer of biofilm and mature fungal colonies that reach the room at every start – environmental guidance actually advises not to run a system you know is mould-contaminated, because it spreads it through the home. The good news: washing with alkaline detergent and pressure removes over 99% of the fungi from the unit regardless of age; the evaporator's aluminium and the roller's plastic do not 'age' in the sense of holding mould more tightly. What you need to know with a 15-year-old unit is that we promise nothing about cooling or consumption – only that it will be clean; if it has refrigeration problems, that is another discussion, with another specialist.
- A picture can document visible deposits.
- Colour and appearance do not reliably identify microorganisms.
- The appropriate assessment depends on the issue; a photo is not a laboratory test.
- EPA advises not to run an HVAC system you know or suspect is mould-contaminated, because it spreads mould throughout the home. [US EPA, 2024]
- Washing with alkaline detergent, brushing and high-pressure rinsing reduces fungi inside the unit by more than 99%. [Indoor Air, 2023]
- The blower (cross-flow fan) is the most fungus-contaminated component of a split unit, more than the filter or the front of the evaporator. [Indoor Air, 2023]
- The evaporator and condenser coils accumulate dirt over time and should be checked every year and cleaned as necessary (US DOE). [US Department of Energy – Energy Saver, 2024]
What we do on site
- We come, open, look and tell you honestly whether it is worth it – if we see it is not, you pay nothing.
- Collection cover; on old units we use more generous film, the housing is sometimes brittle.
- Cleaning solution with longer contact time, pressure wash in place, repeated if the water does not run clear.
- Sanitising solution on evaporator, roller, pan.
- Outdoor unit on the balcony, washed in place – at 15 years it is usually fully clogged.
- See current rates on the Prices page.
What you can do yourself
- Until we come, stop using it – open the window in the evening.
- Filters: you already removed them, wash them and let them dry.
- After sanitising: 'Fan' for 20 minutes before shut-off, that is the rule that keeps it clean.
What NOT to do
- Do not put bleach on the roller – at your age the fumes are all the more harmful, and the roller plastic turns brittle.
- Do not remove the roller yourself – on old units the clips break guaranteed.
- Do not buy a new unit just for smell.
Prevention
A well-washed old unit is a good unit. Annual sanitising and daily drying, and when it truly stops cooling, then we talk about replacement.
