Brand-new unit under warranty – do I need a service so I don't lose the warranty?

Editorial guide · Updated 18 September 2026

In short Short answer: the warranty usually requires you to follow the manual's maintenance instructions – filters cleaned regularly and periodic specialist maintenance – not a 'service' from a particular company. After a single bedroom season the unit is not 'like new' inside, but it is not urgent either; if it does not smell and the condensate drains, you can do the first sanitising next spring.

Situation discussed

In March I had a 9,000 BTU Daikin installed in the bedroom, new block in Aviației. The shop mentioned something about 'mandatory annual service for the warranty', but the certificate only says 'maintenance according to the manual'. The unit is practically new. Do I really need to pay someone to come after a single season?

What is really happening

Daikin manuals say two things: the user cleans the filters every two weeks, and periodic maintenance is done by a specialist. They do not say 'every 12 months at company X'. What matters for the warranty is that you have not neglected the unit – clogged filters, blocked drain, forced louvres. In a bedroom the evaporator stays wet 8 hours a night; a thin, invisible biofilm already forms in one season and becomes a smell in the second. So this is not about the warranty, it is about hygiene: you can skip the first year, not the second.

  3. Cleaning: removing deposits.
  4. Sanitising: suitable treatment of cleaned surfaces.

What the studies say
  • In Romania, a unit's commercial warranty usually requires following the manual's maintenance instructions; consumers can turn to ANPC for disputes. [ANPC, 2025]
  • Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, LG and Panasonic recommend cleaning the indoor unit's dust filters every 2 weeks. [Daikin, 2023]
  • Daikin recommends periodic maintenance carried out by a specialist, in addition to user filter cleaning. [Daikin Europe, 2020]
  • Dense bacterial biofilm (~11,000–47,000 CFU/cm²) dominated by Methylobacterium forms on aluminium heat exchangers. [Current Microbiology / PubMed Central, 2012]

What we do on site

  1. When you book the first sanitising we run exactly the same protocol as on an old unit, only faster: sealed cover, alkaline cleaner, adjustable pressure wash of evaporator and roller, pan and hose, sanitising, outdoor unit.
  2. We do not open the refrigerant circuit or touch the flare joints – nothing that could affect the warranty.
  3. We leave you the before/after photos on WhatsApp and a note with the date of the visit, useful if anyone ever disputes maintenance.
  4. See current rates on the Prices page.

What you can do yourself

  • Wash the filters every two weeks and keep a few dated photos – that is your proof of maintenance.
  • In autumn, before you stop it for winter, run it a few hours on 'Fan' to dry the interior, as the manual says.
  • Check once a month that condensate drips outside while cooling.

What NOT to do

  • Do not sign a 'service contract' out of fear – the manufacturer does not require it.
  • Do not use sprays or solvents on the unit; the manual explicitly forbids them and that really can affect the warranty.

Prevention

Bedroom = annual sanitising from the second season on. With a small child or allergies in the house, twice a year.
