Ceiling cassette — why does it take longer but cost the same as a wall unit?

Situation discussed

We have a 4-way ceiling cassette in the living room of a penthouse in Herăstrău, installed 4 years ago, never cleaned. I read that a cassette is more complicated because you have to lower the grille and access everything from above. See current rates on the Prices page.

Editorial explanation · Revizie AC

What is really happening

The core method is the same across unit types: mechanical washing with alkaline detergent, brushing and rinsing under adjustable pressure reduces fungi inside by over 99%, and the blower (cross-flow fan) remains the most contaminated component of a split, whether it's a wall unit, cassette, duct unit or portable one. The difference is purely mechanical — the housing's geometry and access to components — not the chemistry or cleaning efficacy.

  1. The central intake grille and filter.
  2. Surrounding air outlets.
  3. Maintenance access must be safe and appropriate to the unit.
What the studies say
  • Washing with alkaline detergent, brushing and high-pressure rinsing reduces fungi inside the unit by more than 99%. [Indoor Air, 2023]
  • The blower (cross-flow fan) is the most fungus-contaminated component of a split unit, more than the filter or the front of the evaporator. [Indoor Air, 2023]
  • Professional cleaning of split-unit components substantially reduced bacterial and fungal counts on all measured components. [Frontiers in Public Health / PubMed Cent, 2024]

What we do on site

  1. We lower the 4-flap grille, fit a sealed collection bag around the ceiling opening, protect the furniture below the cassette with foil.
  2. Alkaline detergent, adjustable pressure wash of the evaporator, roller/blower, condensate pan and drain hose.
  3. Fragrance-free sanitising, grille reassembly, functional test (drainage, air direction), filters.
  4. Outdoor unit (likely on the roof or shared balcony) checked in place.
  5. See current rates on the Prices page.

What you can do yourself

  • Cassette filters come out through the grille, same as a wall unit — every two weeks in season.
  • Check visually below the cassette for damp stains on the ceiling — a sign of a clogged drain hose.

What NOT to do

  • Do not accept a 20-minute 'quick sanitising' on a cassette — the geometry doesn't allow full access that fast.
  • Do not leave the wash water without a sealed collection bag — on a cassette, water drains straight into the false ceiling.
