The outdoor unit is in the yard at grass level, next to the dog's spot – what problems come up?

House in Chiajna, the outdoor unit (for an 18,000 BTU Daikin) sits on the ground on two bricks, by the fence, where the dog also lives. It has dog hair, grass clippings and leaves in it; in winter it was half in snow. Do you clean this one too? Is it different from a block?
What is really happening
A ground-level unit draws in everything floating 30 cm above the soil: dust, pollen, mowing clippings, hair. The layer reduces airflow through the condenser and raises condensing pressure – a documented loss of capacity and efficiency. Leaves at the base block the unit's drain holes (in winter heating mode, defrost water must get out) and keep the coil damp. Dog urine is acidic and corrodes aluminium; it cannot be repaired, but it can be limited with a stand and a small fence.
- Keep the air intake clear.
- Do not obstruct discharged air.
- Service access and clearances depend on the manual and location.
- Fouling of the outdoor condenser raises pressure drop and condensing pressure, reducing the split unit's capacity and efficiency. [Science and Technology for the Built Env, 2019]
- The evaporator and condenser coils accumulate dirt over time and should be checked every year and cleaned as necessary (US DOE). [US Department of Energy – Energy Saver, 2024]
- ASHRAE/ACCA Standard 180 sets the standard practice for HVAC inspection and maintenance, with periodic checks of coils, drain pans, filters and fans. [ASHRAE / ACCA, 2018]
What we do on site
- Unit off at the breaker; we remove leaves and grass by hand from the base and grille.
- Condenser detergent on the coil (sides included), longer contact time for the hair felt; low-pressure wide-jet wash, from inside out, along the fins.
- Fan blades and grille washed; we check the drain holes at the base are free.
- Visual check: stand, cable, electrical box cover, corroded fins – we tell you what we see.
- Indoor unit (18,000 BTU) with cover, adjustable pressure, two solutions, pan and hose. Price by quote for 18,000 BTU, given by phone beforehand.
What you can do yourself
- Mow with the unit off and the mower discharge pointing away.
- Fit a 30–40 cm stand and a small fence 50 cm away – free air, dog kept off.
- In autumn, clear leaves from the base before the heating season.
What NOT to do
- Do not cover the unit with a tarp in summer 'against dust' – it overheats.
- Do not plant a hedge right against the unit; it needs 50 cm of air on all sides.
Prevention
Ground unit in a yard with a dog: annual wash is a must, plus your leaf clearing in autumn and spring.
