Home humidity and air conditioning

Updated · reviewed by certified technician

In short Air conditioning dries the air, which is good up to a point: below 40% humidity mucous membranes get irritated, above 60% dust mites multiply, and above 80% on surfaces mould grows. A dirty unit no longer dries efficiently, because a loaded coil condenses less, while holding moisture in its own pan.

  1. A hygrometer tracks room humidity.
  2. Drying laundry, cooking and other activities add moisture.
  3. Leaks and damp surfaces require separate inspection.

What is really happening

Air conditioning dries the air, which is good up to a point: below 40% humidity mucous membranes get irritated, above 60% dust mites multiply, and above 80% on surfaces mould grows. A dirty unit no longer dries efficiently, because a loaded coil condenses less, while holding moisture in its own pan.

A 30-RON hygrometer on the nightstand tells you more than any feeling. Target: 40–60%. If you are constantly above, the unit needs cleaning and the drain checked; if below 35%, raise the setpoint and do not leave the unit on 'dry' for hours.

The evidence

What to do

Mechanical pressure cleaning of the evaporator, blower and pan inside a collection cover, then sanitising; filters washed every two weeks; room humidity kept between 40 and 60%; the unit dried on fan mode before winter. No sprays over dirt, no bleach in the unit, no refrigerant "top-ups".
